Padre Pio? Ramona Thursday, April 30, 2009

Question:

Hi, Brother

What are your thoughts on Padre Pio? I am reading a book by him and not sure what to think.

He had many assults by the devil. Many , according to him, were physical. Serious assults. If he was so close to God and truly a man of God, wouldn't it be that the devil would not be allowed to touch him?

Thanks!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Ramona:

St. Padre Pio was a very holy man and now a powerful saint, equal to St. Benedict I think, in spiritual warfare.

St. Pio was harassed seriously by the devil. This was because of his great holiness. Most people are harassed by demons because of sin of their own or others.

But, anyone who is doing a work for God will most likely be harassed in some way great or small. This is the harassment of revenge for doing God's will and the harassment that seeks to discourage a person into giving up, even to the point of rejecting God. That is the motivation of the demons anyway. The holier one, or the more threatening a person's apostolate may be, the more likely the devil will harass in big ways. This is a completely different kind of harassment than that that from bondages and attachments caused by sin.

Read the stories of the Saints. Most of the Saints wrestled with demonic harassment, even St. Paul (remember the story about the "thorn in the side" of St. Paul? That "thorn" was a demon St. Paul says).

There is an old saying that if one is not being harassed by the devil it is because he is not doing his job as a Christian. A coach potato Christian is not likely to get much harassment, if any.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
