Question:

Br. Ignatius,

First, I would like to thank you for this site and for all you do. Second, I hope your doing as well as you can and that God grants you health.

My God Son (from baptism), has been exploring different types of spirituality outside the Roman Catholic Church. My mother (his grandmother) informed me that, although he has been attending mass, he is reading on the Egyptian pagan gods and what I suppose is some sort of new age religion that venerates them.

As his God Father, his spiritual well-being is one of my responsibilities (that's what my culture teaches). I'm concerned because I remember reading somewhere long ago that the Egyptian sun god was, in fact, satan, and that many of these other gods were, in reality fallen angels.

So, I have two questions

1. Is what I remember reading about these false gods true? Are they the devil and his minions?

2. How can I confront my God Son with the danger he's placing his soul in and encourage him to stick to the Holy Catholic Church? I'm not very tactful, and don't want to correct him in a way that would seem aggressive or hostile. I do, however, want to stress the truth of these things to him in the hope that he will listen.

I pray for him and all his family (after all, his mother is my sister) daily.

Thank you in advance for your attention.

Jose

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Jose:

One Question #1: Many of the pagan deities are objects such as the sun, moon, trees, etc. These are false gods of course -- there is only One God who is the creator of the universe and all things in it.

St. Paul tells us in Romans 1:19-23:

19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse; 21 for although they knew God they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man or birds or animals or reptiles.

While demons may have inspired ancient peoples to create and worship false Gods, the development of the false gods may also begin in the imagination of the people. Even when the false god is a product of the peoples imagination, demons can and do attach themselves to these concepts and images. Demons, of course, have a vested interest in anything that will detract a person away from the True God.

Today, when people explore these false gods the interest may be associated with demonic influence, but most often it is a psychological issue with the person. They are searching because they feel empty in the faith tradition they are already in. Feeling empty in the faith is usually a factor of ignorance of the Faith. They feel that the answers they need in their lives cannot be found in the Church and perhaps the answer can be found in some other spirituality. If they only knew the fullness of the Faith they would realize that we never have to go elsewhere to find the answers to our troubled times and lives.

of course, it is possible for demons to see these dynamics in a person and help it along by adding fuel to the fire. Demons love to hitchhike on problems that already exist.

On Question #2: I think you need to take it slow with your God-son. Listen instead of preach. Ask him what it is that attracts him to the Egyptian gods. Listen closely to his answer. Look for clues of his dissatisfaction with Catholicism. At one point, you might say, "Son, that is very interesting. Do you know that what you are truly seeking can be found with Christ and His Church?" The point is to listen to him, and then when he is ready to hear, to educate and inform him about how his needs and the answers he seeks can be found in the Church.

Certainly, pray for him continually. And, pray hard for the Holy Spirit before speaking to him to give you the words that will speak to his heart.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
