How God communicates with people Katie Friday, April 24, 2009

Question:

Would Jesus communicate to you through the hymnal when you go to visit Him in church? Would He do this on a regular basis? I am asking this because every time I go to a church and open a hymn book, the song is very relevant to what I am thinking. Once I was thinking I would have liked to join religious life and I opened the hymn book to "The Summons".

Last week, Divine Mercy Sunday, I opened the hymn book to "Mercy Lord" by Michael Avolicino. Then today I was tired and depressed and felt like Jesus never paid attention to me and I opened the book to "I heard the voice of Jesus say". I admit I did this the last time with a teeny bit of the intention to see if it would be applicable and it was. Would Jesus communicate to people this way or it sort of new agey and just wishful thinking?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Katie:

God can speak to us in many ways. Sometimes that can be through serendipitous discovery of pertinent bible passages or a hymn or some other writing. One can often open the Bible to a pertinent passage, or a hymn book to a pertinent hymn, by coincidence as well.

I do not think this is something that God would likely do on an ongoing regular basis, but then He can do what He wants. We have to be careful, however, to not approach this with magical thinking.

Keep in mind that hymns, in general, speak to the needs and desires of the human soul. That is one of their purposes. Thus, opening a hymn book to almost any hymn will likely resonate with you as if it is speaking to you.

Now that you are paying attention to the possibility of this experience, your mind will be "tuned" to interpret almost any hymn you turn to as a message that speaks to you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
