Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius Mary,

Seeing as soul music was the forerunner to rap and hip-hop and derives from rhythym and blues (albeit mixed with Gospel), and judging by the lifestyles of many of its exponents, e.g. James Brown and Marvin Gaye, am I right in concluding that it is and has been a dangerous influence?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Teresa:

Sorry about the long delay in responding.

Rap is not music. That is not just my opinion, but the opinion of Ray Charles, and anybody else with two brain cells in their head Wink.

Blues, however, is a legitimate musical form, and can be very good. But, as with all forms of music, there can be particular pieces or sub-genre that are not good for the soul. Judgment needs to be made on a case-by-case basis.

The personal lives of the musicians is not an impediment to their music. If we were to judge the music, or art, or writing of the artist by the way they lived their lives, we would have to empty about 90% of the library. We must remember that even reprobate sinners can write, or compose, or paint, or sculpt beautiful, inspiring, and noble art work that is worthy for Christians to enjoy.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
