Question:

Dear Br. Ignatius,
I would like your opinion and advice.

I have been attending a Catholic charismatic prayer group for over a year, and up to this point it has been a good experience. The last meeting was different.

The lay couple who usually lead the group weren't there. The priest who usually comes to the group ended the meeting with a long diatribe against the pope because of the lifting of the excommunication of the St. Pius X bishops. He said things like the pope made a bad decision, he wasn't well informed, that basically it was if the Church was saying that you could do anything you wanted if it was in Latin (re the anti-Semitic remarks of a bishop). He said it was a slap in the face of Vatican II priests like him. Needless to say I was not pleased.

Another thing I found disturbing was the way a man there prayed. He rocked back and forth, put his hand to his head in a strange gesture, palm open and facing out. He prayed loudly in "tongues", which actually did sort of sound like a real language (not the usual repetition of a few syllables). He also went onabout a dark cloud coming over america, he said he saw a mushroom cloud over the capitol, etc. It was disturbing to me. I know St. Paul says that if there isn't an interpreter the person speaking in tongues should keep quiet.

Do you think my concerns are valid? I may not return to the prayer group. What do you think?

Yours in Jesus and Mary,
Kayla

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Kayla:

Your concerns are 100% valid. I would not return to that group.

To begin with the arrogance of this priest is amazing. It is he who is uninformed and for him to sow discord and doubt toward our Pope based on his ignorance is called dissension, which is a sin, and which is of the devil.

As far as this man who puts his hand on his forehead as if it is some kind of antenna to capture the "words of God" and violating the Pauline rules for Tongues by speaking without an interpreter, would be humorous if it weren't so pathetic and even dangerous.

Although the Charismatic Renewal has great proimise, what you are experiencing is unfortunately all too common in the Renewal -- mostly because of the Pentecostalism that contaminate the Renewal. See the article, Charism Gifts Building Up the Church (pdf file), for details on this.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
