I dreamed about God, and out of my body experience | Cynthia | Monday, January 5, 2009 |
Question: I had an unusual dream the other night which seemed so real to me, that I would almost say that I was partly awake when it happened. I felt a strong wind permeate my being, and "I" was lifted out of my body and taken on a journey by God to see the origins of the world. It was like flying, and was somewhat disorienting physically, but very beautiful. I returned to my bed, but within minutes the wind came again. Again I felt like I was being separated from my body, rising up as in levitation. This time, God took me on a journey through space to see the future progression of the world, right up until world's end, which was a dazzling and beautiful sight. The last sight I remember is the moon and sun merging into one brilliant orb of light, viewed over a green and lovely horizon. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Cynthia: These sorts of experiences really cannot be analyzed in a forum like this. I would need to know you and talk with you to get a sense of what is going on. Those who have such experiences ought to find a spiritual director with whom to discuss and discern the experience. One should NEVER interpret them alone. What I can say is this sort of experience as one of four possible sources: 1) It is only a dream. About 99% of these "dreams" are just dreams. 2) It can be a result of psychological issues or even bio-chemical reactions in the brain, or some other medical cause. 3) It can be from God. God, however, does not give us these experiences for fun. He has a reason for it. We need to tryh to discern what that reason my be. 4) The devil can counterfeit mystical experiences and dreams. He has a purpose too. The devil wants us to become interested in things like prophetic dreams, out-of-body experiences and such to sabotage our relationship with Christ. Beware. At the very least I would suggest asking God to remove these and any other experiences that are not from Him. Speak with your pastor or spiritual director, someone who knows you, to get their opinion on this. One big clue is that is you tell God that you do not want these experiences and you have them anyway, then the experiences are not likely from God because does not force Himself on us. We will be praying for your discernment on these matters. God Bless, For information on how to receive help see our Help page.
