feeling guilty Josephine Friday, November 28, 2008

Question:

Hello Bro.Ignatius, another query from me. In these tough enomic times, my husband is working steadily and making money, I have enough to go shopping and buy whatever I need; I do not smoke or drink, but indulge myself sometimes with cosmetics. I do volunteer and give frequently to charities and am always ready to help someone in need; so why do I feel guilty that I have money and means?

When I volunteer at the charity org. I see many people come in who are sick, cant pay their bills, are hungry, whatever. I try to help in whatever capacity I can.

Could this possibly be Demonic? I know he attacks the mind as you stated in one answer to someone. I do attend Church regularly. I am very grateful for what I have, and take nothing for granted, so can you enlighten me on this 'guilt' feeling? thank you. Josephine1960

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Josephine:

To feel guilty for the blessings God has given you is telling God you do not appreciate His grace and are not thankful. I do not think you want to do that.

If you horded your blessings then you have something to feel guilty about, but you are not doing that. You are charitable with your money and time. That is good stewardship.

There is nothing wrong with wealth, even a lot of wealth (assuming one gains that wealth legally and ethically). What matters is if we are good stewards of the grace God has given us. We need to remember that all things belong to Him, even our money. We are mere stewards of His money that He has entrusted to us. You are a good steward.

Whether we have little or a lot we have an obligation to be good stewards and to be charitable and joyful givers.

To your question, demons could be inspiring these feelings, or your feelings may be your own. Either way, you need to reject such feelings and praise God for what you have. Each time you have a guilty thought, say out-loud if possible:

"STOP:! I reject this feeling which is not of God. I accept only feelings that are pleasing to the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for all that you have given me and help me to be a good steward of your grace."

If you have the guilt feelings 25 times a day, then say this prayer each time. When you say "stop" it can be helpful to hold out your hand in a "stop" gesture. This gesture and saying "stop" helps to ground this intent to stop these feelings. Then specifically rejecting the guilt feelings begins the healing process, followed by thanking God and asking for His blessing.

There is also a prayer in the SW Prayer Catalog on Controlling Thoughts if you need to use that.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
