Question: Brother, I beg you to give me your advice. I had a conversion experience three years ago that completely changed my life. I was a cradle Catholic, attended a Catholic school and college, but fell away, for as you and so many other authors have said, if one truly knows the Catholic faith, one would never leave it. I did not know it. I am at a loss as to what to write with 2,000 characters at max to describe how I wish you to help me. Truthfully, Brother, I am begging for your help in the simplest way I know how. Your help request forms say that your roster is full, but I beg you to call or email me and decide for yourself if I am a candidate for your help. Please, Brother- I need spiritual advice by someone who knows the enemy firsthand, who understands the difference between mental illness and diabolic oppression or obssession, or is at least willing to work in conjunction with a psychologist to heal me. I feel very reluctant to explain the alleged diabolic and/or divine experiences that I have gone through since my conversion over the post like this, if that makes sense to you. I am desperate to have someone who is able to discern spirits speak with me and tell me if I truly am crazy, if it is God, if it is all the devil, or even if it is all three. Today I went to see my psychologist, whom I have been seeing since May of this year, and he told me he was going to write a letter to a psychiatrist exploring the possibility of my being schizophrenic. I was devastated by this news. I had brought in your article about alleged apparitions and said I did not feel as if I were a person who could have had visions from God, as I am not humble, not virtuous, and certainly not peaceful most of the time. I have always wondered, constantly, since my conversion three years ago, if I wasn't crazy or deluded completely by an evil spirit under the guise of an angel of light. I had gone to this psychologist specifically to get to the bottom of it all, and today-this. Please help. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear K: I am sorry you are having these troubles. We will certainly be in prayer for you. I am a little confused in reading your story. If I am reading this correctly you are having some sort of visions but you doubt that it could be from God. Then you were surprised about the possibility of a diagnosis of schizophrenia. If you are having some sort of ocular vision-like experience there are only four possibilities: 1) visions from God; or 2) hallucinations of a medical or psychiatric origin; or 3) "visions" from the devil; or 4) a combination of "2" and "3". The first thing to check out is the psychiatric possibilities. Schizophrenia is one possible cause of your experiences. There are other possible medical causes, too. I would cooperate completely with the psychiatrist and undergo the psychiatric testing needed. This does not mean that you are necessarily schizophrenic just because you need to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. At this point all this is exploratory. There are cases like yours in which the psychiatrist sometimes can find nothing wrong. This would a possible clue to a spiritual problem. Other cases the psychiatrist is not sure what is going on and gives a default diagnosis of undifferentiated schizophrenia. This is diagnosis is rather general and as such it can also give us a clue depending on all the other factors. In any event, the next step for you is to cooperate with the psychiatric evaluation and see what happens. If he prescribes any medication, then be sure to follow the prescription exactly. Once that is done and we see what happens, then a decision can be made as to what else needs to be done, if anything. Right now (as of we are not taking new clients, but when the time comes check with the HELP page to see if we are open and then you may file a Help Request. God Bless,
