Is it ever ok? | Jay | Monday, September 15, 2008 |
Question: Hello Bro.Ignatius, Jay here once again. I have seen a video by one 'psychic' named Concetta Bertoldi who claims, since she was a child, to have contact with the deceased. I must admit to watching the brief video and she speaks of how the soul leaves the body through either the head or feet. I dont have to mention how devastating it is for us humans to loose a loved one and or close friend; she says they 'watch' us doing everyday normal things; it made me feel a bit uneasy. Now what I am attempting to say is, is it ever possible for a loved one to really see us, not make contact per se, but just to 'see' us without it being a 'demon' or nonhuman entity? |

Question Answered by
Dear Jay: While I understand the pain of loosing a loved one, we must resist the temptation to be even curious about psychics and mediums with the alleged abilities to contact the dead. To begin with the chances of these people having contact with dead human beings is about zero. What is more likely is that these people are in contact with demons masquerading as humans, assuming they are not frauds or psychiatric, which is most often the case. In any event it is absolutely prohibited by God for us to attempt contact with the dead. Watching videos like the one you mention only pricks at our curiosity that can lead to sin and worse. It is never ok to attempt to contact our dead loved ones. It is sin, and it can even lead to demonization. As to the question of whether or not our loved ones in heaven watch us, I am sure that they, in the bliss of heaven, are focused on God, the beatific vision, and not on the earth. But, God perhaps does permit them an interest in their loved ones on earth as suggested by Hebrews 12:1
These "witnesses" are not our loved ones looking down on us like voyeurs and intruding upon our privacy. Whatever awareness our loved ones in heaven have of our activities here are earth is only that which God allows them. There may be rare times when God allows our loved one to come to us in a time of trial and suffering. There have been testimonies in this regard, but this is extremely rare and never happens at our instigation and behest. So, yes, our loved ones may be permitted to see us in whatever ways our Lord permits. God Bless,
