Blasphemous thoughts Kayla Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Question:

Dear Brother,
I do have a question but I feel some background is important.
This past week i was on vacation visiting my sister who having marital difficulties. I have been praying intensely for their conversion and the salvation of their marriage. I tried to speak to them,if only a little, how important it was for them to pray together, and gave them a contact for a marriage ministry.

I was very happy to spend this time with them, as I am planning to enter a monastery as nun, and hopefully will be making my three month live in (or entering for good) soon.

This past week, while at Mass, I had a very blasphemous though immediatly prior to recieving Holy Communion. I have had blasphemous thoughts during Mass before, but usually I just don't pay attention to them. But seeing how this was immediately prior to communion and was about Jesus, it was especially disturbing.

Do you think this was a spiritual attack? If so, do you have any recommendations?

Also, what might be indications that ther are negative spiritual forces at work in a marriage that is experiencing difficulties?

Thank you so much and God bless you,
Kayla

Dear Kayla:

I praise God for your vocation and will be in prayer for you as you continue your discernment for religious life.

It is not unusual at all for a person to be attacked by the Enemy just before entering religious life. These blasphemous thoughts are probably just that -- an attack by the Enemy to rattle you.

When this happens say a quick prayer rejecting these and any other thoughts that are not of God. We have a prayer to Control Thoughts in our Spiritual Warfare Catalog that might be useful too.

I believe it was St. Teresa of Avila who had problems with lustful thoughts intruding upon her. These things are common, you are not alone.

In any regard, when thoughts like these happen, prayers to reject the thoughts, ignoring them, re-focusing your mind on the Eucharist, is one of the primary ways to battle against this.

As for the discerning demonic influence in a problem marriage, that is a complicated thing. It is generally not possible to know if there is a demonic element by just observing the married couple unless there are paranormal things happening in the house or to their person. Most of our problems are caused by our own selves. We do not need the devil to get ourselves into marital discord. Most marital discord comes from issues of pride, selfishness, ego, lust, and the like.

But, since demons love to hitchhike on problems that already exist it is always possible that a demon can be on the sidelines encouraging the negative behavior and feelings. In that regard it is always good to pray spiritual warfare prayers for troubled marriages.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
