Question: Dear Bro. Ignatius, I recall faintly that I read a book by C. Bernard Ruffin on Padre Pio, and that it contained a story about a nurse who somehow had recourse to Padre Pio or was supported by him. Anyhow, it recounts how the nurse was hassled by a doctor who was staunchly anti-Catholic and a satanist. One time, a large black cat appeared and was causing amuck in the hospital. The nurse was terrified and managed to throw her keys at the nose of the cat which caused the cat to retreat. Later, the doctor came with a large bandage covering his nose. When the nurse inquired what had happened to his nose, the doctor replied something to the effect that it had been the nurse who had thrown the keys at his nose. Secondly, I've heard from some sources that native Americans still participate in strange practices. One story in particular was when I was speaking with a Catholic seminarian who had been in law enforcement in the Indian Reservations in the Southwest United States. He recounted how there was a practitioner of magic or, a witchdoctor, or something to that effect. Anyhow, this witchdoctor had a home and late at night there would be strange lights coming from the house. Also, he told me that there was a man who was a drunk that would often associate with this witchdoctor. He said that he was once trying to speak with this man and followed him out to a field of rather tall grass in the evening or dusk. The man suddenly collapsed about 5 yards ahead and a coyote appeared that strangely peered at him for sometime and then trotted away. My questions are: -Is it possible for the devil to do strange things like shapeshifting? -Has this been something that has been recognized by the Church even unofficially like possession, or the demons like incubi. -Why do native Americans hold on to these occultic practices? Thank you. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Sam: This subject was thoroughly discussed in our Spiritual Warfare BBS. I refer your there for a more detailed answer. As to your questions, it is impossible for the devil to change a person into an animal, or an animal into a person. As for why Indians hold on to these beliefs I would imagine it is because of their tradition. We all hold on to traditions. God bless,
