Question: Dear Brother Ignatius, I have a question regarding ghost hunting shows, and shows that deal with Hauntings and possessions. I watch a show called Ghost Hunters every time it is on, I also watch a program on the Discovery channel called A Haunting, everyday in the afternoon. I do not know why I watch these shows, I just like to. I know as a Catholic I am not supposed to delve into the occult or go ghost hunting, etc.. I would not do that. I am wondering, if just by watching these programs could they open up a door to the demonic? Is it a sin to watch these shows?
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM Dear Debbie: It is not a sin to watch these shows, but it is not necessary prudent to do so. My concern is not so much that you watch these shows as it is that you watch it "every time it is on" and that you really do not know why you watch them. This could indicate an unhealthy interest in the topic, or even an attachment. C.S. Lewis in this book, Screwtape Letters, warned: There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about demons. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. I would advise that you stop watching the shows altogether. If you feel like "withdrawal" symptoms in not watching them that would be evidence of an attachment. You do not want an attachment to something like this. God Bless, Bro.
