Mental Illness | Liz | Friday, February 29, 2008 |
Question: I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder 3 years ago. It was only last year that I have accepted Jesus as my savior and found the Lord. Am I possessed by the devil or is there a chance that my mental illness can be healed? I have a strong faith in the Lord and I am not losing hope. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Liz: I am sorry to hear about your illness, but I praise God that you have found our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mental illness is usually an issue of brain chemistry. There are various brain chemicals and functions that may be in imbalance and not working properly. This causes mental illness. It is a disease, not demon possession. As for being healed of mental illness it is always possible to be healed by God from any illness. Usually, however, God does not heal us from our illness, but rather heals our soul (which is far more important that healing of our bodies or mind). God can give you great graces though you illness. For example in my own case I am disabled and suffer pain and discomfort everyday. Yet, I am happy in my illness because through my illness I have become closer to God than ever before. I would rather remain ill and close to God than to be healed and take God for granted. Living with illness is a great sacrifice, but God honors our sacrifices. You will have to talk to your doctor as to the prognosis of your illness. Some mental illnesses may be cured, most can be managed with medication. There is hope to live a relatively normal life to raise your kids and to live your life in love with God, your family, and your neighbor. We will be in prayer for you. God Bless,
