Question:

I had a man ask me today at one of my jobsites if I was planning on taking my niece and nephew to the Shriners circus this weekend. He said that he will be playing a clown in the circus. He explained that he got involved with the Shriners through Freemasonry. He said he loved being in the Masons and talked about all the ways they helped the community.

Most of them tend to be churchgoing Protestants. I have a good friend who is also in the Masons and has advanced to the Knights Templar through the York rite.

My grandfather was a Mason and my grandmother was in the eastern star. My great grandfather was a mason, a member of the KKK, and a deacon in the Baptist church. I've heard nothing but good things about the organization from it's members. They seem to be real enthusiastic about their involvement.

I do know that it is occultic in nature and definitely not good. I don't know a whole lot about it's practices because it is a secret organization and most members won't go into detail.

Can you tell me exactly what makes it an occult organization? Are these people at the lower levels being decieved about its true nature? Thanks and God bless!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Stacey:

All other things aside, such as their good works, the philosophy of the Freemasons is inherently incompatible with Christianity. Its rituals are barbaric and smack of occultic rituals with death oaths and promises to mutilate and kill any member who reveals the "secrets" of the Masons.

There is no possible way a Christian of any denomination can tolerate membership in the Masons. Those who do are either idiots, marginal Christians, delusional, or just don't care.

Here are some links that explain why Masons are condemned by the Catholic Church (and should be by all Christians):

This source is an encyclopedia article that gives a history of Masons:

The very first ritual for new members includes death and mutilation rituals. Such "Culture of Death" and ambiance of the occult should cause even ignorant Christians to run from the room.

The "good works" of the Masons in the community does not justify a Christian supporting them or joining them. Even the devil can do good works if it serves his purpose. Witches and satanist do good works too. Thus, I am not impressed by the Mason's good works. Their philosophy is what counts. And that philosophy is not of God.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
