Question:

I have posted before and I'm having trouble with two issues.

I posted around a year ago, with a different name, I tried to pray but alas, I have had trouble to do so. I am very insecure when it comes to talking to God. I wear a scapular, metal, however, in order to keep God close.

I have still been struggling with mass, as my sensitivity to God's grace grows it hurts to be in communion and the graces reveal my pain.

Issue 1) I think I simply need prayers for this one. God has opened my heart to see the pain of others. I can "read" others emotions very accurately and with this I am able to help others come to healing, and as this healing in life progresses, seeking spirituality and Jesus and God within the Catholic church. On the same hand its very scary to be able to do this, and have an ability to reach out to someone, and to see the pain of people around me when my friends say its people from all over the world who need their help. I'm 99% sure this is from God as I find only good in it. However, I do want to be careful.

2) I am struggling with many things, especially due to the sexuality issues. I have been struggling with feelings I feels becuase of connections made that I had no desire to make. I also realized and am dealing with the death of two children thu miscarriage in my youth due to abuse. I don't know how to reconcile this with God at all. It makes it VERY hard to believe in Him.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Autumn:

I am sorry to hear about your struggles.

God loves you and is with you. As for the abuses and other bad things that have happened to you, those things were NOT God's will. It is not His fault that such things happened.

Bad things happen to us for several reasons NONE of which have to do with God -- they have to do with ourselves or with others.

Bad things happen because of decisions we make or because of decisions other people make. We all have free will; we all have the ability to choose. If someone chooses to hurt us, it is their choice, God has nothing to do with it.

God will not intrude upon free will. Contrary to popular opinion God does NOT get His way most of the time. Everytime we sin God does not get His way since He does not want us to sin. But He has to allow us to sin because He has given us free will. Free will is a gift of Himself. It gives us the ability to love. Without free will love is not possible. Love cannot be forced, it must be chosen. Without free will human beings would be mere animals -- we would not be human.

Thus, evil comes into the world, bad things happen -- even to good people -- because we each have the ability to choose. It is a God who loves us so much that He is willing to risk us making bad decisions and even abusing each other and even rejecting Him in order to give us the ability to love  -- to love Him and to love each other.

The people who abused you made a choice to abuse you. The fault is theirs, they have the responsibility for their actions. While God could not stop them from making their choices, He can comfort you if you let him. He can bring goodness out of evil.

In fact Autumn it sounds like God has made lemonade out of the lemons in your life. It sounds like you have the Gift of empathy and consolation. This is a special gift that God gives to a few people. It allow them to help others heal from their hurts.

Your own experiences have prepared you to be an empathic person and to help others. Praise God, Autumn. He has given you a wonderful gift. He has made the bad experiences of your life into something wonderful and beneficial and which glorifies Him.

Having gifts like this is scary at times. I feel that too in what I do and the gifts God has given me to do what I do. But it is a wonderful gift. Rejoice in the fact that God is a wonderful God who can take bad experiences of the past and turn them into gifts that help others and serve the Kingdom.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
