Dahn Yoga, Martial Arts Spiritualism | Cora | Monday, February 25, 2008 |
Question: What Catholic resources are available to discern when spirituality may not be Roman Catholic? I understand that the Catholic Church prohibts the spirituality associated with Dahn Yoga, and the Martial Arts. Could you please site the Catholic sources that specifically instruct against Dahn Yoga, Martial Arts Spiritualism? I want to start teaching CCD again and would like to pass on the Catholic teaching on this subject since I was never taught this very important topic in CCD. Thank you Respectfully, Leah |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Leah: The Church does not make statements about each and every possible activity. That would not be possible. Like with any parent who wants his child to make sound decisions, the Church teaches us principles from which we are make proper decisions about things that are not specifically mentioned. The issues of marital arts and yoga and the like fall into this category. Some of the Church documents that do give us the principles to make a prudent decision include: Christian Reflection on the New Age On Some Aspects of Christian Meditation In addition to this you might want to read two of my previous Q&As: Also their is a website by a former New Ager, now Catholic, who has some good insights on this: Also is an article be the great Father Hardon, may he rest in peace: Why Yoga is incompatible with Catholicism
