the Hamsa symbol | Giovanna | Wednesday, January 2, 2008 |
Question: Hello Brother and God bless. Thanks for this site, it is wonderful. I would like to know if you know anything about the Hamsa symbol, or the hand of God. It has Arabic/Hebrew orgins and many people wear this symbol as jewelry. Recently, my sister gave me a pair of earrings for my birthday with this symbol, they are really beautiful and they came with a little card explaining that the symbol also represented the Hand of Fatima, Muhammed's daughter. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamsa Do you think it would be okay to wear them, as long as I do not attach any superstition or inordinate inclinations toward the object? Do you also think I could get the earrings blessed? I was not quite sure...thanks!! |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Giovanna: The Hamsa symbol is an amulet to protect oneself against the "evil eye." As a Christian you should not be wearing amulets or talismans. These are occultic symbols. Even though you do not attach any superstitions or power to this amulet, it is still a symbol of that occultic philosophy, a symbol that appeals to occult powers to ward off curses. St. Paul tells us that not only are we to avoid actual evil, but we are to avoid even the "appearance" of evil (1 Thess 5:22). To wear this occultic symbol on your person is to "give appearance" and also to give support to its use since placing a symbol on our person is seen as a kind of endorsement of the the symbol. As a work of art the Hamsa can be okay to own and to display with other artwork in your home as long as you attach no occultic power or superstition to it, have it blessed to be sure there are no demonic attachments to it, and its presence does not cause scandal or any other inordinate interest in its occultic nature. However, I think you can probably find other works of art to represent your Arab background that does not have the spiritual baggage of the Hamsa. In any event, I certainly do not advise wearing the Hamsa on your person as that does imply an endorsement of the symbol that as a Christian you do not want to make.
