Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Jason:

I praise God that things are improving.

I am not sure of what you are asking. If you are asking about the state of the world, I believe the world is demonstrable worse than it has been within the memory of several generations.

While sin and evil has always been part of the world since the Fall of Man in the Garden of Eden, several new symptoms have appeared in recent years.

A few examples is that today sexual sins are the norm, instead of the exception, and are no longer considered sin. All generations have committed fornication, but in the past we knew it was wrong. We may have done it anyway, but we knew it was wrong. Today, the current generations seem to think there is nothing wrong with fornication.

Thus, in today's world the conscience of the current generations have been seared. St. Paul predicts this in his writings. For example in Romans 1:18-32:

For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because the thing which may be known of God is clearly revealed within them, for God revealed it to them. For the unseen things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being realized by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, for them to be without excuse. Because, knowing God, they did not glorify Him as God, neither were thankful. But they became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, and birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. For they changed the truth of God into a lie, and they worshiped and served the created thing more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

For this cause, God gave them up to dishonorable affections. For even their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another; males with males working out shamefulness, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was fitting for their error. And even as they did not think fit to have God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do the things not right, being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; being full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, evil habits, becoming whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, insolent, proud, braggarts, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, perfidious, without natural affection, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous order of God, that those practicing such things are worthy of death, not only do them, but have pleasure in those practicing them.

And also 2 Timothy 3:1-7:

Know also this, that in the last days shall come dangerous times. Men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked, Without affection, without peace, slanderers, incontinent, unmerciful, without kindness, Traitors, stubborn, puffed up, and lovers of pleasure more than of God: Having an appearance indeed of godliness but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid.

For of these sort are they who creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins, who are led away with divers desires: Ever learning, and never attaining to the knowledge of the truth.

Here is another translation of verses 2-5 that may help to understand the passage:

People will be selfish, greedy, boastful, and conceited; they will be insulting, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, and irreligious; they will be unkind, merciless, slanderers, violent, and fierce; they will hate the good; they will be treacherous, reckless, and swollen with pride; they will love pleasure rather than God; they will hold to the outward form of our religion, but reject its real power. Keep away from such people.

There have been many times in history where these verses may apply but none more than today. Yet the real difference today is the lack of conscience to know what is sin. Our society had lost its moral compass and replaced it with a compass of self-indulgence and whatever gives one pleasure.

As I mentioned, in the past people have done this, but society still marked this behavior as sinful. That mark of sin is gone. This is seen in our language. Today a homosexual sodomite is "gay;" those living in concubinage are "living together;" fornicators are merely "sexually active;" etc.

So, yes, there is something wrong with our world. It is sinful and that sin is getting more bold and "in-our-face" as the years go on.

Because of this wicked world we need to be even more on guard to live our Faith with devotion and fidelity.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
