Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius,

I recently submitted a question about "hooks", and after thinking more about my past and my own "hooks", I felt compelled to write and ask you this question.

When I was 16yrs. old my friend and I went to see "The Exorcist" at the movie theatre, I remember being absolutely scared to death about the things that I was seeing and hearing in that movie, I remember when the possessed girl started cursing God and saying all those blasphemous things, I felt frozen with fear. I left the movie early and still couldn't sleep through the night for months.

I, now an adult, have seen the whole movie, and I am still scared to the bone, could the viewing of this movie as a teenager put together with all the other sins that I have committed cause these thoughts that I have been suffering through? Could this be a psychological trauma that I experienced and if so, should I talk with a therapist? What, should I do? I am desparate, I really need your help. I just want these horrible thoughts to leave my mind once and for all.

Debbie:

We need to guard our senses. Satan can mess with our imaginations thus what we read, watch, listen to matters.

I personally believe the movie "The Exorcist" is a dangerous movie. It has caused a lot of problems for a LOT of people, including myself.

It is certainly possible that your problem of blasphemous thoughts may have begun by watching this movie. This could be your "hook". Even though watching the movie was not sinful, it was, I believe, imprudent.

Perhaps you need to renounce watching this movie and ask God to cleanse your mind of the images and sounds of the movie and especially renounce going back to watch the movie as an adult (tisk, tisk).

If this is your "hook", renouncing the viewing of the movie and asking for a cleansing may only be the beginning of the battle to overcome this. "Hooks" can be like fish-hooks -- hard to remove -- but they can be removed.

If you need help, then contact me.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
