Question:

Sometimes I am religious and then I fall back into the occult. When I am religious I suffer from sleeping problems. I see demons when I close my eyes and I feel disturbed and attacked in the middle of the night and I get nauseous or throw up. If I close my eyes I see pentagrams and faces of demonic entities that make my stomach drop. This is why I avoid religion. If I become complacent, nothing attacks me and then I fall into bad habits like reading occultic literature like Colin Wilson and being amoral and indifferent and irrationally angry.

If I get scared I get back on track. Today I was on a website where you ask a question and it gives you a "yes" or "no". I intended to ask one question about whether my previous boss had given me a bad reference and then quit, but the tool had a way of "pulling me in" so I ended up asking it many questions despite my fear. I asked, did god love me and it said no. Then I asked ten times and it kept saying no over and over.

Then I asked, "was my aunt saved" and it said no, and I suspected this because on one of those nights when I was up nauseous and terrorized "they" once told me my aunt was in hell. Then I asked about my relatives, and it gave me pretty accurate answers about whether they were saved or not based on what I had observed about their characters (although based on the stupidity of my behavior you would probably assume I'm not a great judge of character...I know, however, nobody really knows who is saved and who is not).

Then I asked if it was evil and it said "yes" and if it was "fallen" and it said "yes". Then I asked if God loved me when I was child and it said "yes" and if God loved me as a teenager and it said "yes", but said after the suicide attempt God stopped loving me.

I asked would God ever love me again and it said "no" and this upset me, and to quell my fear I tried to dismiss it as "chance" so I asked it about ten more times again and it kept saying no. It also said God hates humanity (I guess because of all the evil the human race causes), and that both the doctrine of free will and predestination is true, which I don't understand.

Anyway, I guess my question is, 1) what can I do to be saved? I feel like it's urgent and that I am so far gone, but I am still itching for God to love me, and to help other people who may be on the wrong path. If I ever told anyone this story, they would immediately rationalise or else they would dismiss me as being kind of dumb and suggestive. But perhaps some of our souls are in serious jeopardy.

2) What can I do to worship God and not feel like the prey of the evil one, i.e. up at night sick or being under psychological attack? I always turn away from praying and being good because once I do, I become prey. I genuinely believe in God, but maybe I'm just a bit crazy, in which case, I should just check in to a mental hospital.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Katie:

Generally speaking, to be "saved" you need to be baptized, profess your faith in Jesus Christ and obey what he teaches (through the Church), avoid mortal sin, and die in a state of grace. God has given us the Sacraments of the Church to help us do this.

To involve yourself in the occult is to commit the grave sin against the 1st Commandment about worshiping only God. To involve yourself in the occult risks your soul.

If you are attacked like you describe when you are religious that is a sign you are doing the right thing following God. Think about it. Why are these demonic attacks after you when you are religious? Because they want you to stop.

Why do you not get attacked when you are complacent? Because you are doing what Satan wants you to do -- avoiding religion. Satan wants your soul. Are you going to give it to him? Do you want to go to hell?

If the answer is no, if you want to go to heaven, then make a commitment to God, renounce all occultic activity and philosophies, live as a good Christian going to Church each Sunday, praying, devotions, etc.

You will be attacked, but you have to persevere through that. The demons want to scare you out of religion because they want to molest your soul in hell. Do not fall into their trap.

Resist the devil and he will flee the Bible tells us. You need to decide in favor of God and resist the devil and keep resisting. The devil will fight back because he wants you, but you must continue to resist. Finally, he will flee.

Katie, God loves you. He loves you sooooo much. He wants you to come to Him and snuggle into His arms. He will comfort you. There is NOTHING that can stop God from loving you.

One of the greatest verses in the Bible is that in Roman 8:38:

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

NOTHING can separate you from God's love. Nothing.

Suicide attempts? God loves you anyway. Involvement in occult? God loves you anyway. Turn away from Him? God loves you anyway. Turn away from prayer? God loves you anyway.

God ALWAYS loves you. And He is ready to forgive you of all that you have done. Just ask Him. Go to confession and clean your life.

Then begin living a life that God has for you and abandon all this occult nonsense.

If the devil attacks you for this, just say to Him, "Get out of my life Mr. Devil or I will get my big brother to tear you up and my big brother is Jesus Christ, the biggest big brother on the block, and in the universe."

More specifically, check out the Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog for prayers that may apply in your case. Check out the How we Can Help You section, especially the "Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance."

These things may help you to persevere when you are attacked and eventually keep the attacks from happening.

But, before you can do all this, you MUST commit to God and abandon ALL occult activities and things once-and-for-all. Throw away any occult books, music, movies, games, magazines, or other occult items that you have. STAY AWAY from occult websites like the one that you describe in your post.

Get yourself clean. Then live the Christian life.

If you need additional help to overcome the attacks then perhaps we can help. But, get clean, get into the Christian life, and get into Jesus.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
