Question:

Should we have a "hatred" for Satan, i.e., when we think of him should we make ourselves feel anger and hatred and disgust towards him, or should we just feel very cautious and on guard towards him and leave it at that?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Anne:

This is a good question. The answer is No, we are not to hate anyone. God does not hate Satan. God is love and He loves all His creatures, including Satan and the Fallen Angels.

St. Paul says, "Be angry but do not let the sun go down on your anger. Do not give the devil an opportunity."

Hatred and sustained anger is the devil's game. If we sustain anger or hate we are killing our own souls. The devil would love that.

No, we are not to hate anyone, not even Hitler, not the terrorist of 9/11, and not even Satan.

We are, however, to learn the schemes and tactics of our enemy, Satan, so that we can defend ourselves against his "flaming arrows." We ought to have respect for Satan's intelligence and power, which is greater than ours. But God has the ultimate intelligence and power and thus we need not truly fear the devil. If we are with God, as our late beloved Holy Father always said, "Be not afraid."

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
