RE: Conflicting Priests | Omar | Saturday, July 7, 2007 |
Question: Hello Brother, In response to what you said about priests not knowing much about demonic attacks, ghosts, etc, I would further it if I may by saying that our church doesn't research the area of demonology, ghosts, and paranormal phenomenon at all. Its knowledge of these matters is scanty at best, which is sad, considering that the spiritual realm envelops these issues. Just wanted to share my thoughts on this matter. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Omar: Actually the Church itself, as opposed to individual priests and bishops, is quite knowledgeable about these things. There are Saints who have written about these things, there is now an International Association of Exorcists composed of bishop-appointed diocesan exorcists, and many books have been written by priest and laity on the subject. Jesuit priest Herbert Thurston did extensive research on the poltergeist phenomena detailing reports of ghostly events going back centuries. He gives case histories and offers remarkably accurate analysis. Fr. Thurston wrote and researched at the beginning of the 20th Century. He died in 1939 at the age of 82. The book "Ghosts and Poltergeists", published in 1953, is a compilation of Father's writings on the subject.. There is plenty of information out there. Some of those books on listed in our Recommended Books page. There are also books written hundreds of years ago that deal with spiritual warfare. The problem is not necessarily a lack of study, it is that our society does not want to learn from that study, and many, if not most of our priest and bishops do not wish to deal with this subject. That is where organizations like ours come in. We remind people that spiritual warfare exists and offer that information about these topics both from our own experiences and from the experiences of priests and laity who have written books. But on the score of adequate understanding, study, and teaching of spiritual warfare by the average priest or bishop, I agree with you. God Bless,
