Did I have a demonic attack? Megan Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Question:

I had a dream last night in which I was feeling mean, defiant, and angry. I was standing in front of a mirror and I saw my face elongate and my mouth open extremely wide, wider than any human could really open their mouth, and this horrible growling was coming from my throat. I turned to look out a window, and there was some sort of hideous demon who was also growling menacingly, but sort of with a smirk. I suddenly had this feeling we could do great damage together and was wanting that so I reached out to him. Just before I grabbed his hand, I startled awake and found myself growling in my sleep. I was not snoring - I was completely growling.

I felt an intense sense of fear and dread and immediately said an "Our Father" to calm myself.

I have returned to studying more Christian readings lately and wonder if Satan is trying to lure me away.

I don't have a history of personal or family mental illness. Life is stressful, but nothing that I am not able to handle. That's why I am fearful it was a demonic attack rather than a bad dream.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Megan:

Dreams tend to be the creative workings of the brain processing anxieties, unresolved emotions, and events of the day. It is possible that this is the source of your dream.

The growling may have been just a physical manifestation of the dream, the dream continuing for a few seconds while we wake.

But, the demonic flavor, which can happen in a regular dream, and the fear, coupled with the proximity to your returning to studying your faith "may" suggest that this may have been an attack.

If this happens again, I would suggest prayer the Bedtime Prayer of Protection found in our Catalog linked below. But in any event do not let this experience or any other negative experience keep you from studying and growing in your faith.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
