Question:

Dear Bro Ignatius Mary
Thank you for the effort that you put into helping others.I am currently teaching in the public school system by Distance Education.I have been assigned many schools. At one of my schools there are children that are part of the "Brethren" sect.I am very worried about my young students.

They are only 7 years old.Although the students are well cared for (I have been out there to visit ).It is a four hour drive to get there so I cannot visit them often.

I pray for them all the time as I do for all of my students. The sect is very wealthy and very influential in the town .They have also built their own school but I think it is for secondary students only.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Anon:

I am astonished that you are teaching children of the Brethren. The Brethren are usually strict separatist and have nothing to do with people outside their fellowship and would certainly not put their children in a "evil" public school.

The Exclusive Brethren, as they are known, are offshoots of the Plymouth Brethren established in the early 1800s.

Exclusive Brethren practice a rather strict separation from the evil world. They shun things they consider evil such as television, the radio, and computers (though recently copmuters have been allowed as long as they buy the computer from their leader). Their charter is 2 Timothy 2:19 "The Lord knows those that are his; and, Let every one who names the name of the Lord withdraw from iniquity."

They restrict their social activities to those of whom they share the Lord's Supper, schooling outside of their community is normally forbidden, university is forbidden. These people shun the world and its evils.

This is why I am almost shocked to hear that you are teaching some of their children especially in a public school of any sort -- even long distance.

Anyway, having this position gives you a great opportunity to pray for these children in a intimate way.

From what I know of the The Brethren, however, to be on the safe side I would not try to teach them anything contrary to the Brethren ways, just teach them the subject to which you are assigned and silently pray for them. Prayer is more powerful in any event.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
