Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius;

Do you think it is a good policy to buy books or videos that deal with the occult, yoga with the intention to destroy them as you always instruct when you bring them home?

Recently I was at a consignment store and saw a video called "The Blair Witch Project". It was a horror story dealing with a film crew who encountered witches or something. It was filmed as a documentary but was really a movie. Anyway I didn't buy it but now feel that maybe I should have as if anyone else came into the store and bought it they might believe it. In a way I thought maybe the video was put in my wayby God or my guardian angel so I would buy it, destroy it and keep it out of someone else's reach. Is this faulty thinking?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Linda:

I do not think it is faulty thinking, but it may be unrealistic thinking. For example, for a movie like "The Blair Witch Project" what effect is there from buying this video from the consignment store. This video is in every video store, Walmart, and even convenience stores. A person likely to buy this movie will find it in numerous places besides this consignment store. If they do not find it there, they will find it in a store down the street.

In return you have relinquished your money to the consignment store and the owner of the video and taken the risk of taking home a "nasty" that may be attached to the video. I think your money is better spent where it can do more good--like donating to this apostolate :)

Now, if you found a rare item in the consignment store, such as an old book of spells, or book of the dead, or perhaps some other item while not rare but is not commonly found in your area, then it might be worth the risk, it you feel God is calling you to do so, to buy it in order to destroy it. In this instance there is a real effect since an interested person will be deprived of this item and cannot find the item down the street at another store.

I might add, that the more rare objects are also more likely to be more dangerous and thus more important to destroy.

But, keep in mind that one always takes a risk in doing this sort of thing. If a demon is attached to the object, it could transfer its attachment to something else, like your house, before you get the item destroyed. Be sure God wants you to do this sort of apostolate.

But, for common items, like a popular movie, unless you have millions of dollars to buy up the whole inventory in the country I do not think it will have much impact.

On the other hand, if you feel a particular nudge from God to buy this item despite the fact that it can be purchased down the street, then do so. Known only to God may be that a person will be coming into the consignment store in a few hours after you leave that would have bought the item and not thought of buying it except that they see it in this consignment store.

Also, there is not necessarily a demon attached to every item like this. God may call you to buy "this" particular item because it does have a demonic attachment, whereas the same item down the street does not have any attachments. As Mary said, "Go ask Him and do as He tells you." But, be aware of and be prepared for the dangers in doing this.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary

P.S. On a side note: If people do have items that they think should be destroyed, before destroying them, contact me. Sometimes these items can be used in our research or used in our training classes. We, of course, "de-bug" such items when they come in, and even before they come in. Check with us, just in case.
