hour of 3 a.m.? Omar Monday, April 16, 2007

Question:

Hello Brother:

I've heard it said that the hour of 3 a.m., is the witching hour, where the devil mocks the Holy Trinity, (mockery of Christ's crucifixion and death at the hour of 3 p.m.) Is this acknowledged by the Catholic Church, or is it merely occultic superstition?

Thanks and God Bless.

Question Answered by Mr. Joe Meineke

Dear Omar,

A time that could be called the "witching hour" is not superstition. It is a fact that witches and satanists perform many of their spells and rituals at night - typically between the hours of 12:00 AM and 3:00 AM due to the significance of those hours as a mockery of Christ's Passion. But, this is not the only time rituals are performed. Occult rituals may be performed at any hour of the day. Generically, I suppose one could refer to any of the times between those hours as the 'Witching Hour,' although the phrase - as far as I know - has traditionally applied to the midnight hour and was associated with witches, not satanists.

In terms of this being a mockery of Christ's crucifiction, yes, some - but not all - demonolotrists (those who worship demons, aka, Satanists) do this because it is the opposite of the hour of Christ's death at Calvary which was at 3:00 PM. This "opposite of good" is par for the course when it comes to demonolotry and demons.

The phraseology of your question reminds me of an issue that perhaps needs to be mentioned. There is a tendency to accept only those things as true that are officially recognized by or commented upon by the Church. It would be nice, I suppose, if the Church did comment on every circumstance, but that is not possible. There are many things that are self-evident, such as the formula 1+1=2 that the Church makes no comment nor does she need to because such a formula is self-evident. There are other issues that the Church need not comment upon because they are just statements of fact determined upon their own merits to be either are true or untrue, proven or unproven. What satanists do (or not do) is merely a fact (or not) and does not need a comment or acknowledgement from the Church. It is something that just is (or is not).

Thus the question is really, is it true that the devil mocks the Trinity at 3am?

This question about a "witching hours" reminds me of something else that perhaps ought to be discussed while we are at it. Ed and Loraine Warren, of Amityville Horror fame, have been in the habit of making dogmatic interpretations about the nature and behavior of demons. The Warrens dogmatically proclaim that the 3:00am hour is the hour when demons are more active and that their purpose in doing so is to mock or blaspheme the Trinity. While it is true that 3:00 AM (and the number 3 in general) is sometimes a common thread demonic activity, we need to be careful about making - and believing in - dogmatic pronouncements about the "why" behind ANY observation in demonology and paranormal phenomena. Such interpretations must remain within the realm of "theory."

Could that theory be true, however? Of course it can - it even sounds very reasonable and plausable. In fact, the Warrens may be right. That's not the point, however. No one, no matter their experience or expertise, has the authority or expertise to make such "dogmatic" pronouncements. Only the Church has that authority, and until she does so, we can only speculate - and we must make it clear that it is just speculation. Anything more is an usurpation of authority that we do not have.

I make this point since the subject of demonic theory has come up and because the tendency of dogmatic declaration among demonologist is rather popular these days.

Bottomline as to your question: Yes, there does exist a significance around the 3am hour where many rituals of occultists and satanists are performed. Some of those people may choose that hour to mock our Lord.

God bless,
Joe Meineke
