Reading Indian classics Francis Saturday, June 30, 2018

Question:

I am of nationality India.

We have our classic legends: Ramayana and Mahabharatha. Will reading these works, on account of its literature value, affect us negatively, in any way?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCD, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Francis:

It is not advisable to read this material. Ramayana and Mahabharatha are concerning Hindu scriptures and gods. Just because it is literature form does not make it okay. The nature of literature stimulates our imaginations, sometimes to the points that we seem to be in the story ourselves.

The devil can manipulate our imaginations with ease, thus is matters what we allow into our minds. St. Paul says to think only on that which is good. The literature you mention is not so good for a Christian. There are many other novels and such that are great for Christians to read like that of the Lord of the Rings, or Chronicles of Narnia.

Because this literature is based upon Hindu scripture and gods, it is best to avoid it.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
