Something funny on the way to the forum. | Anne | Friday, May 4, 2018 |
Question: My daughter had world history in high school. They went through the mythology of the Greeks and Romans. She developed a fascination with the gods and goddesses, and she received a Venus DeMilo statue. She proudly displayed it on her dresser...and Venus never grew arms. One day I was in my daughter's bedroom talking to her when the statue lost her head. The head was perfectly decapitated from the body as if someone had taken a sword and cut the head off, without any cracks or jagged edges. It lay on the dresser next to the body of the statue. I guess I could have offered to glue it back, but didn't. I just said, someone doesn't like Venus. What do you think? |

Dear Anne: I am not sure what to think. There are natural explanations. Maybe the head was already broken and mended. That would be the most obvious explanation. The principle of Ockham's razor must always be applied in situations like this. This principle can be stated as "the simplest explanation is usually the right one." The simplest explanation here, baring additional information otherwise, is that the head was already broken and mended and the glue gave way.
