Question Title Posted By Question Date
territoriality of spirits associated with Freemason sword Nancy Tuesday, January 4, 2005

Question:

I have a question regarding a Freemason sword passed down to my son from his great-great grandfather, who was a 32nd degree Freemason. My husband had asthma and died from an addiction to inhalants. All of my children have a tendency toward asthma. I have heard that decendants of Freemasons can be afflicted with physical ailments due to the involvement of their ancestors in this type of occultism.

First, is this possible? Second, is there any possibility that we are exposing ourselves to dangers by keeping the sword in the house?

One of the apologists at Catholic Answers said that although the Church teaches against involvement in Freemasonry, the sword should be regarded as inanimate and therefore harmless.

To me, it seems that if rosaries and other blessed sacrmentals of the Church have a spiritual power associated with them, it would also be possible for objects used in occult rituals to have this as well.

Could someone send me a brief answer or give me a source faithful to the Magisterium that I can go to?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Nancy:

Catholic Answers is a great place for apologetics, but they are not experienced in matters involving spiritual warfare.

It is possible for an inanimate object to have demons attached or curses attached. Father Amorth, the official exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, talks about this in his books.

Your analysis is very correct -- in the same way that inanimate objects can be blessed, it can also be cursed.

It is also possible for a cursed object held by a family to faciliate illness in that family.

To be on the safe side, I would suggest blessing the sword with Holy Water with the prayers I posted in a previous post and bury the sword in the ground.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
