Difference between SEALING and COVERING Blood of Jesus John Saturday, January 13, 2018

Question:

What is the difference between SEALING oneself in the Blood of Jesus and COVERING oneself in the Blood of Jesus? I've seen both terms on the same SW prayer.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCD, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear John:

Sorry for the long delay in responding. My Father died on Christmas morning and I have been dealing with estate issues.

To be Sealed: Well, we are sealed in the blood of Christ at baptism. To seal means to "To establish or determine irrevocably" or to "confirm or guarantee of something."

Christ seals us in his blood when we believe in him and are baptized. This seal is the confirmation and guarantee of redemption to those who live in Him.

I really do not think we need to pray to seal ourselves as that has already been done in our baptism and is confirmed each time we receive the Sacraments of Confession and the Holy Eucharist.

But, it can be used in a prayer to re-affirm what is already true in a similar manner as the prayer to renew our baptismal promises. In doing so we claim all the benefits that God has provided for us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

To Cover oneself: In my opinion this is a prayer used for protection in a particular circumstance of spiritual warfare. We get this idea from the Passover. The Israelites used a hyssop plant to sprinkle the blood on their doorposts during Passover. Many think that this was all that was necessary to protect the first born from God's judgment. But, that is not so. The doorpost needed to be sprinkled with the blood of a lamb and the family had to eat the passover lamb (Exodus 12:1-8, 21-23). It was then that they were protected.

We can pray to be covered in the blood of Jesus for protection against evil spirits in any given circumstance, but that must be in concert with receiving (eating) the blood and flesh of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. In similar manner, covering ourselves in the blood of the lamb is claiming all the benefits that God has provided for us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. This is a powerful form of pray as the blood of Jesus is what defeats the devil.

I hope this helps.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Maary
