Extraordinary Minister experiences in hospital Anne Thursday, November 2, 2017

Question:

I have had many different experiences bringing Communion to the hospital. I have had a woman with mersa give me a tongue-lashing because she was angry and upset with her condition.

I have gone into a hospital room to find the patient had died. I could go on in this vein, but the point is I went into a room where a young man was resting. I told him I was from the church and asked if he would like to receive Communion. He was very agreeable throughout the prayers, but as soon as I brought out the pyx and opened it, he went wild. He started to yell and scream and became very agitated.

What do you think caused such a reaction to the Host?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCD, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Anne:

Thank you for volunteering to bring Viaticum to people in the hospital. That is a wonderful ministry.

In the incident you mention, the man reacting to the Eucharist in this way, yelling and screaming and agitation, usually means that the man was demonized. Such reaction is typical to those who are seriously demonized or possessed.

In such a ministry one is bound to experience this eventually. When it happens, do not try to deliver the man or even pray over him, but pray for him later. Some of the prayers on our prayer catalog linked below can be useful for this purpose.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
