Question Title Posted By Question Date
Comparison of New Age & Catholic revelations Nathan Saturday, October 8, 2016

Question:

Dear Brother, can you direct me to a source that compares the visions and messages of people in the new age vs. Catholic visions or mystical experiences?

I know some people who are into new age, and they claim to receive messages from angels and ascended masters, mainly through automatic writing. The messages mention nothing about praying, sacrificing, God's mercy or justice. Rather, it's about giving them some secret knowledge about their own importance and their own power. The messages they relay to me sound so different from messages received by people like St. Bernadette, Sr. Lucy, St. Faustina, and others.

Is there a website, or a book that gives examples of both, so that a person can see there is a big difference between the messages?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Nathan:

There is no need to make such a comparison. One does not need to see the differences, rather, we need to ask the seer the source of their visions and messages.

Even when the seer is a Catholic, we must examine the messages carefully. If the message varies from the Bible and Church teaching even one iota, then the message is false. Ultimately, we should not invest in an vision or message unless it has been officially approved by the Church (e.g. Lourdes, Fatima). Medugorje, by the way, is not approved.

Any visions and messages garnered from the New Age and its myriad of techniques, on its face, are false. There are no angels speaking to these people. Rather, these are demons. The ascended masters, spirit guides, spirits talking through automatic writing, Ouija boards, Tarot, or other methods of divination, are demons. Such activity is an abomination before God and grave sin.

The Catechism states:

Divination and magic

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

We should have nothing whatsoever to do with New Age seers and visionaries. For help with apologetics against the New Age, San Juan Seminars has a booklet, Beginning Apologetics 4: How to Answer Atheists and New Agers. I Highly recommend the whole series. Book 4 or any of the series can be ordered here.

We will be praying for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
