Question: Dear Brother, I was recently reading a website about Padre Pio, and I noticed that he was said to have had the gift of "reading souls." http://infallible-catholic.blogspot.com/2012/04/padre-pio-on-his-gift-of-reading-souls.html In some of the examples they give of his behaviors, it seems like he could "read minds." If only God can read minds, how is it that Padre Pio appeared to read minds? Thank you

Reading souls is to read what is on a person's soul, such as to know unconfessed sins, something St. Pio did in the confessional. All gifts are given by God and the effects of these gifts are sourced in God and not in the individual. Only God can read souls or minds. But, God can inform those to whom He wills. For example, only God can know the future, but He gave that information to the Prophets of old. This is the same thing. It is God who gives this information to St. Padre Pio. Reading souls is not the same thing as reading minds. Reading minds is to know a person's thoughts. Reading souls is to read what is on a person's soul, such as to know unconfessed sins, something St. Pio did in the confessional.
