Sister wants to be Physic Medium Chris Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Question:

Dear Brother, Thank you for the work that you do, and for your help in the past.

My step-dad unexpectedly died in May. My half-sister, wants to go to a physic along with my half- brother and his wife to try to contact him, and his deceased parents. She asked me if I want to join them, which of course I don't. She has also told the physic she wants to be a physic too, as she feels she has the ability. She has been copying me on her email correspondence with the physic, but has not talked to me in person about it, even though we are close and see each other every day. I am not sure why, but maybe it's because she is not sure how I will respond. I am old enough to be their parent, and am in that role a little, so I am so glad that she asked me since at least I know what they are up to.

My sister in law is a non-practicing Catholic, and my brother and sister are not Christian. They have not been baptized.

Do you have any advice on how I can clearly explain the dangers of pursuing these things?

Thank you, and God Bless.
Chris

Question Answered by

Dear Chris:

I apologize for the delay in answering.

Well, first, there is no such thing as conjuring up dead loved ones. Any "spirit" conjured by a psychic, medium, or other person will be a demon disguised as the loved one.

Going to psychic, mediums, and such is a violation of the First Commandment to have no other gods before the true God. Seeking out dead loved one and other such things offends God because it seek that which should not be sought and is a distrust of God.

The Catechism states:

Divination and magic

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

All you can do is pray and to try to educate your sister. There is more information in our Spiritual Warfare Library.

There are prayers in our Catalog, linked below, that may be useful to you.  Pray that these attachments to psychic involvement be broken.

Ultimately, getting involved with these psychic and occult activities can lead to demonic harassment, obsession, oppression, bondage, and in some cases, even possession. This is dangerous stuff.

We will be in prayer for your sisters and the other people involved, and for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
