Question:

My daughter is in therapy for an eating disorder which I believe started when she was in college (a Jesuit University) and started questioning her faith. She is now a liberal buffet Catholic dabbling in New Age. I'm convinced her eating disorder is spiritual. What is the best spiritual warfare prayer for rebuking the evil spirit of an eating disorder?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Marie:

Remember that an eating disorder will have psychological and medical aspects that are not resolved by spiritual warfare prayer. With that said, demons can hitchhike on problems like this to make it worse than it has to be and to use the condition to beat down your daughter's faith.

In spiritual warfare the parents have great authority over their household (that means adult children as well). You can pray for your daughter the proxy prayers, the hedge prayers, and the rebuking prayers on her behalf. Doing this is not as good as your daughter doing this herself, but it is better than nothing especially when her parents are praying.

In the rebuking prayer, rebuke the spirit of eating disorder (name the specific diagnosis), and ask God to replace that spirit with whatever the opposite spirit is, for example, the spirit of health, the spirit of self-esteem, the spirit of love, etc. whatever the opposite spirit needs to be for your daughter's situation. Eating disorders are almost always related to some psychological issues such as depression, low self-esteem, not feeling loved. Sometime this program is the result of some trauma. The point is to ask God to give her a positive spirit that relates healing the reason she has the eating disorder.

We will be praying for your daughter as well.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
