Question regarding my job Aquita Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Question:

Dear Bro Ignatius
Thank you for your reply to my earlier query. I am from India.

The office that I currently work in has Hindu owners. In fact, among all the staff I am the only Catholic. They are very religious. They have their own temple nearby.

In the office, they have various things placed for vastu shastra and removing the evil eye.
Their activities are governed by auspicious / inauspicious times. Prasad from various poojas is frequently distributed among employees (I do not partake of it).

On certain religious festivals, they keep lunch for many people which the office staff also partakes of. I have checked with them regarding the food being offered to their God, but they said no, only the prasad is offered.

My question is does all this affect me in any way ? I have these doubts surfacing in mind.

Pl advise
Regards

Dear Aquita:

The issue here, if I understand you correctly, is about eating food that have been offered to a false god. St. Paul answers your question as this exact issue is discussed in the Bible:

(1 Corinthians 8:4, 7-8)  Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "an idol has no real existence," and that "there is no God but one." ... However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through being hitherto accustomed to idols, eat food as really offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do.

In other words you know that their gods are not real and that only true and real God is the Godf of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. You know that your co-workers do not understand this.

The food itself does not commend us to God, nor does it defile us. Food is neutral. Thus, there is no problem eating this food, or not eating it as you wish.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
