Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC
Dear John: It does not matter what posture we are in when we pray. We can be standing up, sitting down, laying on our belly, laying on our back, on one knee, on both knees, while taking a shower or a bath, while on the throne, or even doing jumping jacks. The Bible tells us to always be in prayer, thus it matters not what posture we take to pray. Now, of course, by "prayer" it does not always mean verbal prayer. One needs to pay attention to the road when driving, or paying attention to what one is doing when operating heavy equipment. We must be safe. Prayer, therefore, can be formal, spontaneous, by mouth, by interior thought, or even be action. The act of picking up a pencil from the floor can be a prayer. The Little Flower taught this as "the Little Way." We ought to always be in an attitude of prayer. That way, everything we do becomes an act of prayer. Regardless of the posture or method of prayer the devil will not like it and may attack us. When he does attack we need to rebuke him. We can rebuke the devil from any posture. A rebuke is a rebuke.
