Celtic Cross and Jewelry Crystal Friday, January 17, 2014

Question:

Dear Brother,

I was reading that the Celtic Cross is considered to be pagan due to its history.

I realize that the cross, is of Irish culture and I have a glass plaque with a Celtic Cross on it in my home with the Irish prayer "May the road rise up to meet you" as I am multi-ethnic but of Irish decent.

I don't know if this is true, as I want to purchase some jewelry that are designed with Celtic knots; but I'm unsure now if it would be wise to do.

If you know anything about this and could give me some insight, I would really appreciate.

Thank you,
God Bless,
Crystal

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Crystal:

The Celtic Cross is a Christian cross. There is no pagan history. It is thought that St. Patrick or another saint introduced this cross.

There is no problem with the Celtic Cross or jewelry and Celtic knots (which was co-opted by Christians and found in Christian art.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
