Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC
Dear Omar: I really do not know much about the case. There appears to have been some negligence involved as she died from malnutrition and dehydration. Her parents stopped all medical help for her and relied solely on the Rites of Exorcism. This was a serious mistake that cost Anneliese her life. From what I understand she was examined by several psychiatrists (a common requirements before exorcism is approved). The Bishop gave permission for the exorcism, but apparently was not aware of her delicate physical health. From what I understand she did show some symptoms that could have been demonological, although I think the Church, years later, determined that she was not possessed. From what I know about the case, the primary mistake was ignoring her health by her parents and the priests. It is sad. May she rest in peace. God Bless, Update: Fr. John M. Duffey, who is a reliable source, has written a book about this case entitled, Lessons Learned: The Anneliese Michel Exorcism: The Implementation of a Safe and Thorough Examination, Determination, and Exorcism of Demonic Possesion Fr.
