Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC
Dear Crystal: There is an old joke: A man goes to the doctor and says, "doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this." The doctor says, "Then don't do that." If being around people who are negative or whatever bother you then don't be around them. Do what you have already done with your relative — assert yourself. It may be necessary to keep your distance from certain family members or friends. I have had to tell a couple of my family members that if they did not stop their abusiveness toward me that we would never be in the same room again. We must always forgive, but we are not required to be around these people or to allow them to abuse us. As for your personal reaction to these situations, I think that it is mostly likely psychological, not spiritual. You seem to be a very sensitive soul. As such the reactions you describe are understandable. Some people are very sensitive. That is okay. As for the scent, that too can actually be a psychological reaction. Sometimes, however, such scents happen in the presence of our Blessed Mother. An uneasiness can take place when in the presence of a person who is demonized. But, we need to be careful in spiritualizing every experience. The uneasiness you feel can just as easily be an uneasiness that comes from being around negative people. Just stay away from them. Do not under any circumstances try to diagnose these people or speculate on whatever spiritual attachments they may have. You are not qualified to make those assessments. All you need to know that these sorts of people make you uneasy. That is enough to keep your distance. You need to forgive them if they abused you in some way, but keep your distance, and pray for them. God Bless, For information on how to receive help see our Help page.
