Dear Jane: 1. Well, Jane, most ghosts are demons. They can appear to whomever they wish. For "ghosts" who are not demons, they can appear to anyone God chooses. (see the essay, Seven Kinds of Ghosts, for details about the kinds of ghosts). In addition to this, there are two other ways in which one may perceive the presence of ghost. The first is through our ordinary intuitive senses and God has given everyone. This is especially keen in those who are baptized because all baptized persons have the Holy Spirit within them who can inform a person of a ghostly presence. This is done at the discretion of the Holy Spirit. The second method of perception is to those whom God has given the supernatural Gift of the Spirit of discernment. This is a charism gift. Each of us has at least one charism gift. (See the chart of charism gifts in the essay, Charism Gifts Building Up the Church). 2. The experience you describe sounds like a typical paranormal event of a demon present in your room. Often demons appear in shadow form. Such experiences are rather common. Without knowing details there is no way for me to speculate on why this happened. 3. I am sorry for the loss of your grandfather. As mentioned in the Seven Kinds of Ghosts, it is not uncommon for a loved one who has just died to visit a family member or members. This is sort of a final goodbye and a comfort to let you know that your loved one is okay. As for finding the prayer for your granddad, God does that sort of thing when we ask Him. Praise God that He is the perfect Father. God Bless, For information on how to receive help see our Help page.
