Kappa Sigma, reposted 2011 | Isaac | Sunday, February 24, 2013 |
Question: I am more curious, the Kappa Sig question was closed, but then reported in 2011, was this an invitation? At any rate, I am a faithful Catholic in full union with Rome and a former GMC within Kappa Sigma Fraternity. For what it is worth Kappa Sigma has a rich history dating back to the Great Schism and many of our early members worked hard to provide for a solution to the problems, our founder was present at and killed during The Council of Constance we believe by anti-pope John XXIII, many of them worked in secret and it is in that tradition that we hold our secrecy close. There ARE similarities in style to the Masonic rituals, but meaning and purpose are definitely different. Of any Social Fraternity to be found in the college world none could be more so Catholic in it's founding tradition. I will not reveal any secrets specifically, but I did provide an email, that if you have any specific questions I will answer as fully and honestly as I can. All I ask is that you remember I promised not to reveal any of he secrets and I can not break that promise without then placing my own soul in jeopardy as I would then become guilty of the most horrendous of lies. Br, you previously asked to see the ceremonies, that is not possible, but I am willing and hopeful that I may be able to help you with objections you may hold. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Isaac: The Q&A was reposted because the original post was back when we had a previous Q&A software that we no longer use. Thus, that particular Q&A was reposted in the software we are using now. This is mentioned in the repost you reference. I thank you for your cordiality. Some of your brethren have not conducted themselves with such decorum and maturity. Our position has not changed, Kappa Sigma is unlikely to have changed. The secrecy, in-and-of-itself, without regard to any other issue, is enough to not recommend the society to any Catholic. The Church certainly has a right and obligation to know, and parents have a right to know, that these secrets are not problematic or even damaging to the Faithful who join. The answer to that question is not within the competence of current or former members of Kappa Sigma, not even members such as Senator Dole. Speaking of Senator Dole, as mentioned in the post, Kappa Sigma has been given special privilege by Congress, through the Senator, that no other Fraternity in the United States has been given. This is strange and merely emphasizes the inappropriateness of membership by Catholics, or by any Christians. The Knights of Columbus, for example, a famous Catholic group that has "secret ceremonies", too, does not hold those rituals secret from the Bishop. It is required that any such groups suitable for the Catholic Faithful come under the scrutiny of the Bishop to ensure there is nothing untoward concerning the Catholic Church (canon law prohibits Catholics from joining societies, especially secret societies, that are hostile to the Church), or potentially dangerous to the souls, spirits, and faith of the Catholic people. This is a solemn obligation of the bishop to ensure this. Since Kappa Sigma continues to hold these secrets from everyone, even Congress, even the Bishops, it is unsuitable for membership by any Catholic. We cannot take the word of Senator Dole, nor you, nor any member of the Fraternity. The secrets do not have to be made public, but they do need to be revealed to the Bishop (parents must at least have the assurances of the bishop that there is nothing present to harm their children). Our position and lack of recommendation will remain as long as Kappa Sigma holds its arrogance above appropriate authorities who have a right and a moral obligation to know, such as Bishops and parents.
