Question:

Hello Brother,
I do not know why I am curious in shows like Long Island Medium. The readings on her show appears to be very real and touching. However, I know as a cradle Catholic that God prohibits humans from participating in this type of activity. I wonder why? Would it be because the devil could trick people in thinking they are speaking to their dead relative when in fact it could be a demon? And is there any good in the work that a medium does? Please help to knock some sense in me. God bless!

Dear Sherron:

The reason why you need to immediately stop watching this show is that divination, which is what is happening on that show, if a sin against the First Commandment. The catechism explains:

Divination and magic

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

About 98% of these so-called psychics and mediums are outright fakes doing a con. There are specific techniques, called "cold readings", that are mastered by con artists to make it appear they know information from some occult source, when in fact they are making very good guesses.

If and when these people actually come up with information they could not have known they get this information from the devil, not from God. These people are not talking to dead loved ones, they do not know the future (no one, not even angels and demons know the future, only God), nor can they divine anything about you except through the power of con artistry or the devil or both.

You need to confess your interest in this sinful activity and never again watch that show or any other show that has this nonsense.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
