Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Maria: There is nothing wrong with bonfires, hay rides, and other Fall festivities. Some of the best times I had as a Baptist was in the youth group. The Baptist Church does not celebrate Halloween, but we had Fall festivities that were great and wholesome fun for us kids. And we discussed why Christians should not celebrate Halloween as normally celebrated. As Catholics we know that Halloween is actually the Vigil of All Saints Day. We need to reclaim the day for Christ and abandon the culture of death and the "appearance" of evil that most exhibit on Halloween. Unless people are dancing around the bonfire naked or chanting to the devil, there is nothing to worry about. As Christians we need not boycott Halloween, but rather Chrisitanize it. I have an essay on this topic entitled, Should Christians Celebrate in Halloween. This last Thursday, I read this essay and made other remark on our radio show, Chronicles of Catholic Commentary.
