Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Emelda:

The local bishop, Bishop Jozef Marianus Punt of Haarlem, declared on 31 May 2002, that the apparitions of Ida Peerdeman of Amsterdam were of supernatual origin. That means the bishop said that the apparitions are genuine. Full approval from the Holy See, however, has not happened yet.

The Holy See did express concerns about the prayer that is part of this devotion. The ending of the prayer read, "who was Mary". The Holy See ordered that this phrase be omitted from the prayer and replaced with, "the Blessed Virgin Mary". Thus, the version of the prayer that is approved ends with:

“May the Lady of All Nations, the Blessed Virgin Mary, be our Advocate.”

According to the Bishop, Catholics may make "a personal judgment according to their conscience" regarding the messages and apparition.

It is always true, even with fully approved apparitions, that the Church is only saying that the devotion "may" be an aid to the faithful. That is it; nothing more.

No Catholic is required to believe in any apparition or its messages, and we certainly are not required to participate in any devotions deriving from the apparitions.

Thus, we are free to not believe in an apparition even if the Church approves it. Now, if the Church has approved an apparition we need to be respectful of that, but we are not required to believe in it.

Medjugorje, for example, has been declared not of supernatural origin, by the local Bishops. Thus, until such time as the Holy See makes a decision on Medjugorje, we must respect the local bishop's declaration of the apparitions not being genuine. The Holy See has said that priests are not to lead pilgrimages to Medjugorje.

Bottomline: You do not have to believe in the Lady of all Nations apparitions of Ida Peerdeman. You do need to respect the fact that the local bishop has approved it. We will not know the legitimacy of this apparition, however, until, and if, the Holy See makes a decision.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
