Question Title Posted By Question Date
Exorcist movie recommendation Joseph Friday, March 2, 2012

Question:

Hi the last post kind of reminded me of something I did the other day. I have a christian friend who is not Catholic. She was talking about scary movies and I asked her if she ever saw The Exorcist. She said no and I couldn't believe she never saw it. I feel bad though I told her to see it. I have read in Fr. Amorth's books that it was his favorite movie because it shows what can happen in real life and brought attention back to his profession.

I figured maybe it will show her some truth about the Catholic church and her atheist husband might be "scared" back into the church. I think I made an error now based on your response. Of course being a good example of a Catholic and living my faith is the best way to attract people to God and Church. There are some times when I think people need a good dose of the dark side so to speak to show them demons are real and if real therefore God is real. I know the movie is dramatized but its based on a real case. Do you think I did this person wrong? I mean assuming she sees the movie? Thank you and God Bless.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Joseph:

You need to contact that woman and advise her to not see the movie. It can be hazardous to her spiritually, and even psychologically. Unfortunately, Fr. Amoth tends to not think before he speaks and often says careless things.

I have seen people triggered badly by this film and demonized. Media can make us vulnerable to demonic influences. If a person is in any way vulnerable, this film could be the trigger to fall over the cliff.

As I mentioned in a previous post:

St. Paul taught us that we are not only to avoid evil acts and thoughts, but also to (1 Thess 5:22)  "From all appearance of evil refrain yourselves."

He also taught:

(Philp 4:8)  "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."

The film Exorcist does not apply.

These films only pique curiosity and you know what happens to a curious cat.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
