Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Valerie: Hoodoo originated in the African folk magic ritual culture in West and Central Africa. The Hoodoo we see practiced today is a blended of of the African and American Black folk magic, Native American occultism, and some European occultism. It also extensively uses Biblical characters. Hoodoo conjures spirits (the other name for Hoodoo is "conjure"), casts spells and hexes, thus it is witchcraft. Hoodoo and Voodoo are not the same. Voodoo is a religion, while Hoodoo is a set of magical practices not couched in religion. There is obsolutely nothing Christian about Hoodoo, despite their extensive use of Biblical characters and Christian symbols. Hoodoo, Voodoo, Vodoun, Santería, or other similar religions and/or practices in Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin and Central America have no relationship with Christianity and needs to be avoided at all cost. Involvement in these practices risks demonization. God Bless, For information on how to receive help see our Help page.
