Are these Catholic Saints Crystal Thursday, January 19, 2012

Question:

Dear Brother,

There are a few Saints that people pray to, especially within the Hispanic community, but I was wondering if they are Catholic Saints, as reading up on them, they are on a lot of sites pertaining to Santeria and Hoodoo.

The Saints are Saint Expedite who intercedes quickly and for emergencies, Saint Alex or San Alejo who intercedes to help enemies stay away and Saint Pancracius who intercedes for health and work.

I'm just curious as to know if these are actual Catholic Saints such as St. Joseph, and more or were they venerables or Saints of certain cultures.

If you have any information on this, I would really appreciate it.

God Bless,
Crystal

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Crystal:

Santeria and Hoodoo often borrow Catholic saints, terminology, and devotions for their own purposes. Do not be fooled by the Catholic trappings. These are religions that are hostile and contrary to Christianity.

Two of the Saints that you mention are included in the list of Catholic saints. You can find information for them at the links below:

Saint Expeditus of Melitene

Saint Pancras of Rome

I am not sure about St. Alex/Alejo. There are a lot of Saints names Alexander.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
