Are burning smells a sign of an evil spirit? Marie Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Question:

Hi,

Thanks for the website.

I finally broke down and told a friend of many years what I have been going through since before they knew me (strange experiences). We talked on the phone, and my friend gave me a lot of advice on how they felt I should handle the situation, including finding a good priest to work with me.

When I hung up the phone, I got up and smelt a burning smell to the left of where I had been sitting. It stayed for a long time, and I finally said outloud "I am not afraid of stupid burning smells" (this has happened before - nothing is cooking or burning).

I left the room and came back, and it was now over the table I eat at. I left again and came back after awhile and it had moved and was now in the hall. I left and came back again and it was further down the hall, near the front door. Finally I came back and it was back over the table I eat at. It stayed there and stayed and stayed, so I finally gave up waiting for it to go away and went to sleep.

It really bothers me though. I wonder if something was making itself known? Is that unusual or normal? I could not find a source for the burning, and if it was something from outside, wouldn't it spread out rather than stay concentrated in certain areas? Is there any explanation for this?

I had a dream last night that said the simple truth is that people who smell good smells go to heaven, and people who smell burning smells go to hell. Is that true? I am not sure what to do anymore.

How can I find a good deliverance ministry? Priests seem to be afraid of me and while my friends advice was good, I have tried for years to work with many priests and they all do not want to deal with it. I desparately want someone to pray over me.

Thanks!

Dear Marie,

Thank you for your question.

Have no fear - it is not true that people who smell burning things go to hell or that people who smell good things go to heaven!  Do not let your dreams undermine your faith in God and what He has revealed about how we are to be saved.  Dreams, emotions, feelings, etc., must all be subject to divinely revealed truths.

I know that these types of things can be a bit unsettling at times, but honestly the best thing to do is to simply ignore them; and by that I mean not just pretend that they are not there, but to strive have an attitude of indifference toward phantasmal events.  If this is difficult for you to do, then pray for the grace to be able to do it.  Trying to figure out 'why' and for 'what reason' can be maddening and is unproductive and can lead one to erroneous conclusions.

This does not mean that you do not pray in Jesus' name that the phenonenon stop; in fact, you should.  However, you should not be addressing these things in the way that you did.  Instead, next time, take it straight to God.  If anything is to be said out loud, it should be to God, not to the phenomenon that is taking place.

You also need to pray that God removes this spirit of desperation that you are experiencing and replaces it with peace and humble submission.  Desperation is not of God and can lead us to take actions that can cause even more harm.

Remember:  Nothing is happening to you that has not been forseen from all eternity by God, and He will not allow you to be tested beyond your strength.  That is His promise, and God is not a liar.  He loves you and is watching over you always!:

"No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it."  (1 Corinthians 10:13)
