Exorcist Files show on Discovery Channel Cecilia Monday, October 3, 2011

Question:

Has anyone seen the new Exorcist Files show on Discovery? I was curious about it when they announced it months ago, saying that the Vatican had given them access to information about current exorcists and their cases. I just watched the first episode online and it was chilling - though not very different from most popular paranormal shows.

Do you think this is a legitimate portrayal of the topic, or something we should stay away from? Can watching shows like this open doors to bad things for people, or will it scare them away from dabbling in the occult?

Thanks.

Question Answered by

Dear Cecilia:

I just finished watching the first episode of Exorcist Files online. I am always very concerned about these sorts of programs because there is a great risk that people will become curious about the occult, exorcism, deliverance, or paranormal investigation and want to try it themselves.

Under no circumstances should anyone who is not trained, and more so not called by God, to investigate the occult or paranormal or perform deliverance or exorcism.

With that said, this particular program seems to be produced in a much more professional documentarian fashion than any other programs that I have seen. I am pleased that two of the cases mentioned in the program were individuals who suffered under oppression and infestation because of their involvement in paranormal investigation.

I would like to think that after seeing the horror that those two individuals suffered as a result of their curiosity and participation in paranormal investigation that people will think twice before getting involved themselves. Unfortunately, due to the arrogance and unbridled curiosity that is typical of the human person, I am afraid that even after seeing these two cases that many people will not be deterred.

To your question as to whether or not these types of programs could facilitate demonic problems the answer is "perhaps." Real problems can occur if the person becomes more interested in the subject after viewing such programs.

The Church forbids any involvement in the occult whether that be divination (astrology, Ouija board, tarot cards, dowsing rods, etc.), spirit communication (channeling, automatic writing, séances, or any other means to try to contact the spirit world), witchcraft and sorcery (hexes, spells, and curses), or anything of the sort.

I don't think many people realize that involvement in these sorts of things is actually a violation, a sin, against the First Commandment. It is a form of idolatry, an abomination before God, and a distrust of God. There is never any excuse to use or participate in occult methods to investigate paranormal activity or to seek the freedom of an individual who is possessed, oppressed, or demonized in any fashion.

Except for those individuals who are called by God, and are trained, no one should attempt to investigate paranormal activity or to try to seek the freedom of a possessed, oppressed, or demonized person. I cannot repeat that often enough.

It is important for the public to know the schemes of the devil. If we are not aware of the tactics, tricks, and cons of the devil then we are more likely to fall victim to him. This does not require a person to do research in the occult. All the information that is needed to protect oneself is in the Bible and the writings of the Saints and in the many prayers and sacramentals God has gifted us with through His Church.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
